Dental Crowns

Preparated premolar tooth and dental crown placement

Dental crowns are one of the most common dental procedures performed by Dr. John and Dr. Jeremi Arroyo in their Washington, DC dental office. Dental crowns can serve both restorative and cosmetic purposes, treating a wide variety of dental concerns and problems. A dental crown is like a “cap” for the tooth, providing strength or reshaping a tooth and often preventing the need for a tooth extraction.

Dr. John and Dr. Jeremi Arroyo may recommend a dental crown for any of the following reasons:

  • Replace worn or unsightly metal fillings
  • Improve the appearance of stained or discolored teeth
  • Correct misshapen or uneven teeth
  • Restore tooth cavities or cover teeth after root canal therapy
  • Repair cracked, worn or broken teeth
  • Restore dental implants

Dental Crowns What to Expect

Dental crowns are available in a variety of materials and Drs. Arroyo will recommend the most suitable choice for your dental health, cosmetic goals and budget: options can include gold crowns, zirconia crowns and porcelain fused to metal. We will recommend the most suitable material for your needs and cosmetic goals. The majority of patients will receive a dental crown made from porcelain or zirconia for the most natural-looking result and superior durability. This is especially important for teeth in the “smile zone” that are impacted by damage, decay or have cosmetic irregularities.

The dental crown process will require two visits to complete. After ensuring that you are relaxed and comfortable, your procedure will begin with the preparation of the tooth surface. Impressions will be taken for use in creating your new dental crown. A temporary crown will be attached until your final restoration is ready. At the second visit, Dr. Arroyo will permanently secure your new dental crown and make any necessary adjustments for a secure and comfortable fit.
